Gas Installers
Plumbing and Heating Contractors- The City of Owatonna requires you to be licensed gas installer with the City of Owatonna if you will be installing/repairing more than 6’ of gas piping. Your employees who will be installing/repairing over 6’ of gas piping are required to have passed the Owatonna Gas Piping Examination or hold a Certificate of Competency card. The City of Owatonna offers a Gas Piping Examination free of charge. Please call 24 hours in advanced to schedule taking the test. Phone 507-444-4370. Please fill out the exam application and email building inspections or in person at the Building Inspections Office. Gas Piping Exam Application

What is a Certificate of Competency?
A Certificate of Competency attests that the holder has the necessary qualifications, training, experience and knowledge to install, alter, repair, or replace gas piping.
Reciprocity
We will reciprocate the following cities Certificate of Competency cards from the City of Minneapolis, St. Paul, St. Cloud, Rochester or Winona. If you hold a competency card from another Minnesota City please submit and we will review.
Plumbers and Pipe Layers are also required to be licensed with the City of Owatonna. Owatonna City Code- Plumbers

How do I renew my license?
Renewal letters are mailed annually to Gas Installers, Plumbers and Certified Pipe Layers to verify current licensing, required bonding and insurance on last day in February. License renewal applications are mailed out by the Building Inspections Department in January.
