Wil Natzel of Owatonna designed and created the Light of Learning, a large contemporary light fixture that hangs above the stairs in Owatonna Public Library (OPL). Natzel installed and put the finishing touches on the project in June of 2016.
The Light of Learning is made primarily of corrugated plastic, structural steel plates, and structural aluminum. A set of color-changing LEDs at the top funnels light through the various shapes and forms. Natzel also designed and built several bike rack functional sculptures, including two outside of OPL, in 2011.
This was a Community Collaboration project, one of SELCO’s region-wide Library Legacy initiatives paid for with Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund (ACHF). Through an application process, the SELCO Legacy Review Committee awards funds to libraries and library partners for arts and cultural projects.
