[ARCHIVED] MLK Jr. Day Lunch

NewsFlash - City Website - 2024 MLK Day

The annual Martin Luther King, Jr Day event, hosted by the Owatonna Human Rights Commission has changed a bit but still includes many favorites. Planned for Monday, January 15th  at a new time and location; it’s not going to be an early morning breakfast, but lunch at the Steele County History Center. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. with the speaker’s presentation beginning at noon.  A break in the discussion will be planned just before 1:00 p.m. if you need to return to work.

Picture - Speaker The speaker, Seema Pothini, will speak on recognizing and responding to injustices in the moment by humanizing each other.  Ms. Pothini, Co-Founder and Lead Facilitator of Humanize My Hoodie, combines her experience as a child of immigrant parents and as a teacher, with both students and their families’ experiences, to help educators create equitable learning environments. There will be a discussion on hateful, biased, and derogatory comments and how to respond in the moment.

What is not going to change for this event is the food will be prepared by Plaza Morena. We thank Jose Herera, owner of Plaza Morena for providing both location and food for previous MLK Jr Day events. We are grateful for his support and service provided to the community for many years.

Also unchanged is the desire to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. and recognize the need to reflect on the principles of racial equality and nonviolent social change he espoused. Dr. King advocated for many rights including racial justice, economic equality, and affordable housing which remain important current concerns.

Please join us at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day lunch at the Steele County History Center at 11:30 a.m. on January 15th.  Schools will be closed; this event provides a great opportunity for yourself and your children to explore the Steele County History Center and good food will be diminished by the discussion with Ms. Pothini.

This is a free event so preregistration is preferred at www.eventbrite.com, you will want to search for Owatonna MLK Jr Day.
