Storm Clean-up Underway
August 10 deadline and instructions for curbside pick-up
The deadline for residents to place storm debris curbside for free pick-up is August 10.
Because the City of Owatonna declared a state of emergency following the July 28 storm which caused significant tree damage, free options for property owners to dispose of downed trees and branches are being provided. Resolution #37-25, expected to be ratified by the City Council at its August 6 meeting, is needed to apply for state funding to help address storm damage.
Community members are asked to note the following placement instructions and other details regarding the storm clean-up efforts underway.
The City of Owatonna will provide free pick-up of storm-related tree debris that is placed curbside by the end of the day August 10. This includes storm-damaged limbs and trunks of any diameter. Branches must be trimmed from trunks and trunks must be under eight feet long. This debris must be stacked parallel to the curb in the City’s right-of-way to ensure efficient and safe pick-up. Stack debris so it doesn’t block the sidewalk or hang into the street. Other types of debris will not be picked up. Debris will be collected citywide; therefore, property owners do not need to call to arrange pick-up. Property owners will be responsible for disposing of their debris that is not placed curbside by the end of the Day August 10. City crews are not raking remaining debris or removing debris from private property. Property owners are responsible for yard damage resulting from the storm or clean-up efforts.
The City of Owatonna arranged for fees to be waived through August 10 for storm-related debris to be dropped off at By the Yard compost facility at 400 32nd Avenue West. Please call 507.475.4385 for additional information.
With City staff focusing on storm recovery, sweeping the streets will be delayed. Help from community members is appreciated to clean up leaves and branches from streets to prevent storm debris from clogging stormwater drains when it rains. Those who live near catch basins are asked to help keep them clear. Check out the Adopt a Catch Basin Program online: Adopt a Catch Basin | Owatonna, MN.
All parks are now open. Please be cautious of staff and equipment as clean-up efforts continue. Crews have begun clearing storm debris from 85-plus boulevard trees damaged in the storm.
