Snow Piles and Trash

While the winter season brings a sense of wonder and tranquility, it’s crucial to recognize the hidden dangers that lurk beneath the snow. From structural risks to property and infrastructure, to hazards to pets and people, and the environmental repercussions, snow piles demand our attention and proactive management.

Parking lots and paved surfaces collect salt, debris, gasoline, and oil. Plowing snow picks up and piles all these unwanted pollutants. Snow piles are littered with nasty dirt, also known as “Snirt”. Melt water and runoff from snow piles contain everything from road salt to automotive fluids. As this mixture leaches into the soil and nearby water bodies, it can harm ecosystems and compromise water quality. The impact is not only local but can have far-reaching consequences for the environment.

Remember

Before and after the snowstorm, make sure to properly sweep, collect, and dispose of trash, sediment, and other polluted materials from parking lots and snow piles!
