Winter Driving Tip

WINTER DRIVING TIPS

Winter weather brings snow, wind and freezing temps – along with the hidden hazard of black ice. Black ice is a thin, nearly invisible layer of ice that forms on roads when moisture freezes, often creating deceptively slick conditions. It can appear as a wet road surface but offers little to no traction, creating dangerous driving conditions. Black ice commonly forms overnight and early in the morning. It can occur in shaded areas, at intersections from vehicle exhaust, on bridges and overpasses, and near bodies of water.

These tips can help you drive safely in areas where there may be black ice.

  • Stay calm – Sudden movements can cause skidding.
  • Slow down – Reduce speed, especially in areas prone to black ice.
  • Avoid aggressive braking – If you must slow down, ease off the accelerator instead of slamming on the brakes.
  • Steer gently – If your vehicle begins to slide, turn the steering wheel in the direction that you want the front of the vehicle to go and avoid overcorrecting.
  • Increase following distance – Leave extra space between you and the car ahead.
  • Turn off cruise control – This allows for better control in slippery conditions.

Winter roads can be unpredictable, so keep both hands on the wheel, eyes on the road and your full attention on driving.

THIS WEEK'S IN CUSTODY ARRESTS

  • Jaime Figueroa was formally charged with domestic assault (M) and 5th degree assault (M) stemming from a January 10th incident.
  • Richard Devine was formally charged with 3rd degree DWI stemming from an incident that happened on January 13th. Officers were called to the scene of a motor vehicle accident.  The reporting person advised a vehicle struck a tree at the intersection of School St and Cedar Ave S around 6:10 pm.  Officers arrived on scene to an unoccupied vehicle.  It was apparent the driver had sustained injury from blood left on the scene.  Officers were able to track the suspect's footprints in the snow back to the registered owner's listed address.  After a search of the residence, officers located the suspect hiding in a closet.  Devine had visible injuries and displayed signs of impairment.  A search warrant for blood was drafted and executed.  Devine had one prior DWI from 2018 aggravating this to a 3rd degree DWI.
  • Tawon Walker was formally charged with domestic assault (M) stemming from a January 17th incident.
