During the April 5 City Council Meeting, Bird Rides, Inc. was approved for a license to operate electric scooters within the City of Owatonna. This is Owatonna’s first agreement for a private company for a Micromobility Sharing Operation. Bird Rides has provided scooters in other communities that are similar to Owatonna.

A. Bird Rides, Inc. is the company providing the scooters to rent and determines where they will be used most frequently. Locations may evolve over time based on usage. Scooters are available to rent at various locations listed at bird.co.
Q. Who can use the scooters?
A. Scooter operators must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.
Q. How many scooters are available in Owatonna?
A. Bird Rides, Inc. is beginning its program in Owatonna by providing 50 to 75 scooters.

A. Check out the “How to Bird” instructions on the bird.co website. Using and paying for the scooters is all managed through their app. Instructions appear on the scooters and on their website.
Q. Where can the scooters be used and what restrictions and safety measures are in place?
A. Scooters are allowed anywhere a bike is allowed. This includes sidewalks and trails; however, they are NOT allowed on sidewalks in the downtown area.

A. The City of Owatonna granted Bird Rides, Inc. a license to operate their business in town and will have very little involvement in their operations unless challenges arise.
