Parks and Recreation Winter Weekend Out

January 28-30, 2022

Friday, January 28 

Family Open Swim and Log Rolling

Time: 6:30-8:30pm 

Fee: $4.00 Per Person 

Family Open Swim at the Owatonna Middle School is an opportunity for families to come and enjoy swim time together. During this time there will be 2 lifeguards on duty and the diving boards will be open. All children must be accompanied by a parent. Children with lifejackets must always be within arm’s reach of a parent.

Saturday, January 29

Card Board Sled Races, Snow Shoe Demo and Regular Sledding 

Time: 1:00pm-3:00pm (Back Up Date: February 5th 1:00pm-3:00pm) 

  • Design and build a person powered, corrugated cardboard sled capable of withstanding the descent down the West Hills sledding hill. How creative can you be using only corrugated cardboard as a building material? Come join the fun!  Class 1: Age 10 and under Class 2: Ages 11-17. All participants building a cardboard sled must be registered to race in the competition. 
  • Building a Sled not your thing? Don’t worry, just bring your own sled and join the fun! No registration required for regular sledding. 
  • New to snow shoeing? Come try out our brand new adult and child snow shoes at the sledding hill. No registration required. 

Rock on Ice at Morehouse

Time: 5:30pm-8:00pm (Backup date: February 5th 5:30pm-8:00pm)

Music, lights, fun...we’ll be Rockin on Ice!  Bring the whole family down, warm up by the bonfire and enjoy a night skating to the music! 


Sunday, January 30th 

Family Ice Fishing at Lake Kohlmier 

Time: 1:00pm-3:00pm

Join us on Lake Kohlmier for an afternoon of ice fishing. Limited equipment and bait will be provided -- holes will be pre-drilled for fishing. This is a FREE event for everyone to attend..   Backup date: February 6th, 1:00pm-3:00pm

Hawaiian Themed Photo Contest 

Dates: January 28th-January 30th 

Grab your hula gear! Find your nearest Parks and Recreation Photo frame and take a photo of you and your family in your best Hawaiian attire. Best Hawaiian Family Photo will be chosen by a panel of judges for 10 daily admission passes to River Springs Water Park. (Locations TBD) 

Submit your photos to Owatonna Parks and Recreation by January 30th. Photos can be submitted to parksrec@ci.owatonna.mn.us 


Snow Sculpture Building Contest (Pending Snow) 

Dates: January 22nd-28th 

Location: Central Park 

Get creative, have some fun and join in the Winter Weekend Out’s Snow Sculpture Competition! There are no experience requirements! All you need are a couple of friends, and your spirit of fun, adventure and creativity-we’ll provide a snow block for you to carve!

Snowperson Building Contest 

Dates: January 1st-January 31st 

During the month of January submit a photo of your best snow person creation. Bring your snowperson to life using accessories, colors, themes, etc. Be creative and imaginative! Winners will be contacted after judging is complete. Prizes will be awarded to the Best in Snow (chosen by judges) and Peoples Choice (Facebook Vote). 

Submission deadline is Monday, January 31st. Photos can be submitted to parksrec@ci.owatonna.mn.us
